<p class="MsoNormal"> 死が現実に近くなっています。 <span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

I
had never imagined how I would feel at age 83. In a sense, it is like climbing
up a high mountain and stopping near the peak, looking down at the scenery
under me. I can see some ridges I once reached or others I failed to reach.
Some of the ridges are almost entirely covered in the dense fog and hidden in
oblivion. Other ridges are still standing as if trying to punish me.</span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Death is becoming very real to me.
Although I am still relatively in good health, I feel I am walking toward death
day by day. “Time” has never felt so concrete. It’s funny, when I was younger,
I used to have such hopes as “I can be rich,” “I can be influential,” and “I can
be widely recognized.” Bud now all these ambitions have become withered and I
am learning to “accept the reality.” It is a bitter and sweet feeling. It is a bitter
feeling because obviously, I cannot achieve those goals, and a sweet feeling
because I am making peace with myself and with my external world. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The best thing I have had in life—it
was an encounter with Shinran and his teachings. Without them, my life would
have been a ruin. Because I have met Shinran, I know what it is like to be
lost.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>My wife asked me yesterday, while
we were eating dinner in a restaurant to celebrate my birthday, what my goal is
going to be in the remaining part of my life. If I were much younger, I would
say, “Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be,” but maybe I don’t have enough
time to wait for “whatever.” Therefore, at least I promise that I will keep writing
this blog more regularly. One more ambition I have now is, writing an easy
introductory book of Buddhism and/or Shin Buddhism.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

1941, 11 months before the outbreak of the war. When I was four years old, my
family, including my parents and younger sister, were running for life almost
every day under American air raids. In June, our house was completely burned. We
took shelter in the hall of a nearby elementary school. We received two rice
balls for that day. My sister died about ten days after August 15 due mainly to
malnutrition. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 22pt; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">When, on August
15, 1945, my father told me that the war had ended, whether we won the war or
not was not my concern. I just felt so relieved about the fact that we didn’t
have to run for life anymore. However, the life after that was extremely hard. Sometimes,
we had to boil some grass collected from the roadside to eat. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 22pt; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">The second time
I had a war experience was in 1975, when I was in Mumbai, India. The war suddenly
broke out. Not only the entire city but also the entire India was under the
blackout order at night. As the war happened shortly after my arrival in India,
I was not aware of the blackout order. One night I was reading a book near
the window. Two police officers banged at the front door and began to yell at
the Indian household caretaker. I was told the light from my electric lamp had
leaked out of the window. The caretaker explained I had newly arrived from
Japan and was not aware of the curfew order, so I was excused. I was almost
arrested in suspicion of espionage. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 22pt; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">Now wars are
fought in Ukraine and Palestine, and serious carnage and destruction are
reported. Perhaps those people involved in the wars must be experiencing more
severe fear of death and loss of their loved ones. I feel helpless because I cannot
do anything about it now. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 28.3pt;">Wars break out suddenly
at any time. Keeping this in mind, it is important to be watchful not to allow conflicts
to occur. The biggest duty of the government, and that of each of us enjoying
the relatively peaceful life, is to keep plucking the buds of conflicts,
whenever they show their heads.</span> </p>Toshikazu Arai 生まれたのは</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt;">1941</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">年</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt;">1</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">月で、戦争が始まる</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt;">11</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">ヶ月前でした。 </span></p>

of Śākyamuni Buddha, stayed with and took care of the Buddha for more than 20
years until the Buddha’s Nirvāṇa. Ᾱnanda is called the “Foremost in Hearing the
Dharma” because he had listened to and memorized most of the Buddha’s Dharma
talks.</span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt;">However, Ᾱnanda had not attained
enlightenment before the Buddha’s Nirvāṇa, so he was about to be excluded from
the group of about 500 disciples who gathered to collect the Buddha’s Dharma
talks to make sure that the teachings would continue to guide the people in the
future. But thanks to the strong support from the most senior monk Mahākassapa,
Ᾱnanda was able to attain enlightenment and was allowed to participate in the
compilation of the Buddhist scriptures. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt;">All Buddhist sutras begin with the short
sentence, “Thus have I heard.” This means that Ᾱnanda is reporting what he
heard from the Buddha when the latter delivered a Dharma talk. In fact, he had memorized
most of the Buddha’s lectures, so compilation of Buddhist scriptures would have
been impossible without his presence.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt;">Then, why was it that he was about to be
refused to join the compilation project only because he had not attained
enlightenment? Whether he was enlightened or not, the information he could provide
about the Buddha’s deeds and words would have been the same. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt;">Let me change the subject for a while. I
translated Shinran’s voluminous work <i>Saihō-Shinan-shō</i> (The Path to the
Pure Land) into modern Japanese and English and published the translations in
Japan and the U.S. Now I am using those translations as reference materials for
Shin Buddhist seminars through zoom with some Japanese, American, and European
Shin Buddhists. However, the biggest challenge I face now is the fact that
although I had spent my whole energy to translate the words, sentences, and chapters
during the time I engaged in the translation project, I must contemplate more
deeply than the level of the language to be able to explain the heart of Hōnen
and Shinran. Therefore, I am re-reading them more times and thinking hard
before the seminar begins as if I were reading them for the first time.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt;">In my feeling, Ᾱnanda’s problem was
similar to mine. He had listened to the Buddha’s lectures many times to the
extent he had memorized every word in the Buddha’s lectures. However, he had
failed to reach the depth of the Buddha’s message, that is, what the Buddha
really intended to convey. Other disciples would have found Ᾱnanda’s report of
the Buddha’s Dharma messages empty if it had come from the person who had not truly understood the true meaning of the Buddha's message. To genuinely give a report of the Dharma, it must have passed through the reporter's heart and mind. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt;">When you run into familiar words and
expressions in Buddhist books and Dharma talks, don’t you sometimes take them
for granted and miss their true meanings? That’s a mistake I sometimes make. It
is very important to listen to the Dharma talk as if I were listening to it
for the first time.<o:p></o:p></span></p>Toshikazu Arai 新井俊一http://www.blogger.com/profile/12149415505385472223noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4675714227304853080.post-43788591623565581902023-11-08T13:42:00.001+09:002023-11-08T13:42:56.286+09:00Attaining Birth (“ōjō”) <p> <span> </span><span> </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Recently, a person who I seldom meet told me
that he used to enjoy reading my blog, but nowadays he misses it. Sorry about
my idleness. From now on, I will make it a rule to put down as soon as
something comes to my mind.</span></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 20.0pt; mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;">Today’s topic is “</span><i><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt;">ōjō</span></i><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt;">,” or </span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;">“attaining birth.” In modern Japanese language, we use this term to indicate a situation in
which someone is in a big trouble and doesn’t know how to get our of this
plight.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 20.0pt; mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;">However, </span><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;">“<span lang="EN-US">ōjō” is a very important term in Pure Land Buddhism,
indicating going forth from this world to be born in Amida’s Pure Land. “To be
born” means receiving a new life by replacing the old one. Many people take </span>“<span lang="EN-US">ōjō” for death, but death means one’s life slipping out of one’s
body while </span>“<span lang="EN-US">ōjō” means receiving the Buddha’s life. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 20.0pt; mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Then, what can we do to attain birth in the Pure
Land? The answer is, eventually “entrusting” ourselves to the Buddha. It’s the
Buddha’s job to decide whether or not one is saved. That’s why entirely
trusting the Buddha with our lives of the past, present, and future. This is
similar to a newly born baby totally entrusts herself to her mother’s embrace. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 20.0pt; mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">However, death scares us a lot. Why are we
scared of death? That is because we have not experienced it. This horror is
similar to, in a diminished degree, how we feel before a big operation or when
we have to give a talk in front of a big audience. It is the process of dying
that we fear and suffer. Death must occur beyond consciousness. That’s how I
guess from my experience of operations. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 20.0pt; mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, always think of
Amida Buddha, say Namo Amida Butsu, listen to Dharma talks whenever you have the
opportunity to so that you have the sense of “entrusting yourselves to Amida
Buddha.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
</span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 22.0pt; mso-line-height-rule: exactly;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-hansi-font-family: 游明朝;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>Toshikazu Arai 新井俊一http://www.blogger.com/profile/12149415505385472223noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4675714227304853080.post-35335330004556310702023-06-26T15:08:00.000+09:002023-06-26T15:08:03.898+09:00Living Old Age, Sickness, and Death<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left; text-indent: 42.0pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">“Sickness” does
not necessarily mean physical or mental disorder due to pathologic
microorganisms or accidents. Old age that appears slowly and definitely with
passage of time is also a kind of sickness. When you look at them this way,
both old age and sickness are inescapable attributes of life. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>How
about death? Death becomes reality as soon as we are physically born in this
world. In this sense, death is also an attribute of life.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>In
this way, we are living old age, sickness, and death. Because life contains all
the three, the more we pursue life, the more strongly we feel the presence of these
three unwelcome conditions. Śākyamuni Buddha said life, old age, sickness, and
death are the root causes of human sufferings. At age past 80, I painfully feel
its meanings. (Come to think of it, I have outlived the Buddha!--I'm ashamed.)<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The
four Chinese characters for the four stages of life are written </span><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">生老病死</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">. The
first letter for “life, to live” also means “birth, to be born.” Therefore, you
can read them “birth, old age, sickness, and death.” Then, you can say that
birth is the root cause of old age, sickness, and death. In either case, we
must live through old age, sickness, and death because they are inseparable
from life and begin at the moment we are born in this world. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Still,
I am grateful that I received life in this world despite all those sufferings,
disappointments, and frustrations because they enable me to taste the joy of
life, and the expression of our gratitude to life is Namo Amida Butsu.<o:p></o:p></span></p>Toshikazu Arai
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> それでは死はどうでしょうか? <span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>Toshikazu Arai 新井俊一http://www.blogger.com/profile/12149415505385472223noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4675714227304853080.post-23286651364321763132023-06-20T10:39:00.004+09:002023-06-20T10:39:39.214+09:00Living Old Age<p class="MsoNormal">Hello, how are you doing? Somehow, my life keeps me busy, as usual.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">In the past two or three years, I’m beginning
to realize the meaning of “old age.” <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">From
when I was young, I met many old people and associated with them, but wasn’t
aware what kind of physical problems they had to deal with. They were just
people more aged and frailer than me. One time I stole ten yen from my
grandmother’s wallet to buy a candy and was shocked at the power with which she
grabbed me and pushed me down on the tatami to make me apologize for the theft I
committed. I had never thought she was so strong.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Still, old age was a remote issue for me. </span>However, old age is my problem now. Or
rather should I say that old age is me. For
example, my left eye often becomes blurry due to cataract. I sometimes cannot
follow a high-toned young woman when she is speaking to me <br /><br />fast. I used to walk
fast, but now, when I walk like before, the entre legs ache. I also have a
backache at the same time. Then, before I realize, my body becomes bent forward.
I realize that I’m joining the people whose backs are bent.</p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">More
than a hundred years ago, there was a My</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">ōkōnin, a </span><span lang="EN-US">devout
Shin Buddhist follower, named Genza. His back was quite bent. When someone made
a comment on that, he said, “Well, when it rains, I don’t have to worry about
rain drops falling into my nostrils.” For him, any physical conditions of his were
“given” and were worth thanking for. On the other hand, I am still full of complaints
when nothing is lacking for surviving each day. What a shame!<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal">On May
24 this year, my wife and I visited Senju-ji Temple, the mother temple of
Shinshu Takada-ha. It was a beautiful temple standing in the rural city Tsu. The photo on the left side is the Miei-do, where Shinran's statue is housed, and the one on the right is the Nyorai-do, where the image of Amida Buddha is housed. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpseijVxYLaQWRUg4sNx-0MfBR8Z-APynBK6QDxrHUsDcNJwNNdeg59yDkl9heK8fSHb-DpSeh8c98cm0wpP_oAWqIHWEj14FWjtnVEHWYe85YeWvIxpRE9yPaaFRZJC8Gv5j3A5_8xRLZMlwPQEMFPtuuVBpFPnOUQaFX69rbtd2boKjl_O0D50yZvW-u/s640/%EF%BC%89%E9%AB%98%E7%94%B0%E5%B0%82%E4%BF%AE%E5%AF%BA%EF%BC%88%E5%A6%82%E6%9D%A5%E5%A0%82.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpseijVxYLaQWRUg4sNx-0MfBR8Z-APynBK6QDxrHUsDcNJwNNdeg59yDkl9heK8fSHb-DpSeh8c98cm0wpP_oAWqIHWEj14FWjtnVEHWYe85YeWvIxpRE9yPaaFRZJC8Gv5j3A5_8xRLZMlwPQEMFPtuuVBpFPnOUQaFX69rbtd2boKjl_O0D50yZvW-u/s320/%EF%BC%89%E9%AB%98%E7%94%B0%E5%B0%82%E4%BF%AE%E5%AF%BA%EF%BC%88%E5%A6%82%E6%9D%A5%E5%A0%82.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2aT1Q6p2xwQ6QYoDAfWzqeGzBrrl9By1-66LfP-HtLewdvb_g-G2wQt0odvPXJoZ7SkI3HWyUQo6H_AvB6hngnU3Ok6t54gaa7sYZxZC_H5fcZHvdYYyXooW3AEeQteo40q1myP_ZveXjDBkpBTBH5wyKfwQmyg-FAzhQ1O0lLuYipyfqmTONr8iK5I-2/s640/%E9%AB%98%E7%94%B0%E6%B4%BE%E5%B0%82%E4%BF%AE%E5%AF%BA%E5%BE%A1%E5%BD%B1%E5%A0%82.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2aT1Q6p2xwQ6QYoDAfWzqeGzBrrl9By1-66LfP-HtLewdvb_g-G2wQt0odvPXJoZ7SkI3HWyUQo6H_AvB6hngnU3Ok6t54gaa7sYZxZC_H5fcZHvdYYyXooW3AEeQteo40q1myP_ZveXjDBkpBTBH5wyKfwQmyg-FAzhQ1O0lLuYipyfqmTONr8iK5I-2/s320/%E9%AB%98%E7%94%B0%E6%B4%BE%E5%B0%82%E4%BF%AE%E5%AF%BA%E5%BE%A1%E5%BD%B1%E5%A0%82.jpg" width="240" /></a></div></div><p></p>Toshikazu Arai </p><p> </p>Toshikazu Arai 新井俊一http://www.blogger.com/profile/12149415505385472223noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4675714227304853080.post-28420834815528859462023-04-11T05:41:00.001+09:002023-04-11T05:41:54.230+09:00Acceptance of Old Age<p style="text-indent: 0px;"><span style="text-indent: 26.15pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 26.15pt;">Whether I accept it or not, an 82-year-old person belongs to the age group called "old old," and sometimes I am forced to feel it. When I am walking, my legs
begin to feel heavy and then painful. Perhaps I am a little stooping, because I
sometimes have a backache when I walk for about 20 minutes. While I am thinking I’m walking at a reasonably good
pace, I’m shocked to see a young woman overtaking me. “This is the sign of old
age!” So thinking, I am beginning to accept my old age as if I had met a new
friend.</span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 26.15pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">These days, because the new-type corona virus has
become somewhat under control, I participated in two alumni meetings. Some
of the most popular topics in such gatherings are who has died, who is sick in
bed, who has gone into a nursing home. It looks as if they were trying to
assure themselves that they appeared younger or healthier than others. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 26.15pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">There are a few positive factors of being
old. One, I can go to the movies at a discount admission. Two, the Osaka City
traffic system lets its citizen older than 70 take the subway and bus at
50 yen. Three, some young people offer their seats to us even though we try to
decline their offer. We don’t heartily welcome that kind of offer because it
makes us wonder if we look so hopelessly feeble. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 26.15pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Even so, I think it is a good custom to
offer one’s train seat to elderly people because it is an act of compassion.
Also, on the elder’s side, accepting the offer is also an act of compassion
because by doing so, the offering person’s goodwill is brought to fruition. </span></p>

March 3, my wife and I visited a temple called Ryūkōji in the town of
Shimoichi, to the southeast of Osaka Prefecture. The reason why we visited it
is that the temple was originally founded by Yuien (1222-1289), the author of
the <i>Tannishō</i>, in about 1274. He lived there and died there. Usually, i</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 28.3pt;">t’s not my hobby
to visit places famous for their associations with historically well-known
people or events, but since the place is within two hours’ journey from my
home, I thought it was worthwhile to make this trip.</span></p>

mountains. Many small rivers flow between rice fields. In fact, it is a little
too quiet with many closed stores along the main road. Also, I noticed a lot of
temples, of which a majority were Jodo Shinshu temples. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="mso-char-indent-count: 2.18; text-align: left; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWGvM5LI97M_n3XKTN1Nr4Gr_URc_o9ToifGWlxyqWMCBpJfuW3sZnMi18V3nlILst9BVCjrz2STyoJ7P_1hE7nglpU7ICdDGi4lhn_10bcvENHTbvQAU5yRMicudydYL--DuW4i4TNvh-TevtkyGClB1t0kXUr--wgl_8TAJBb_RBhd_kQhyKIQ8QVw/s640/Yuien's%20Grave%20in%20Shimoichi,%20Osaka%20.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWGvM5LI97M_n3XKTN1Nr4Gr_URc_o9ToifGWlxyqWMCBpJfuW3sZnMi18V3nlILst9BVCjrz2STyoJ7P_1hE7nglpU7ICdDGi4lhn_10bcvENHTbvQAU5yRMicudydYL--DuW4i4TNvh-TevtkyGClB1t0kXUr--wgl_8TAJBb_RBhd_kQhyKIQ8QVw/w150-h200/Yuien's%20Grave%20in%20Shimoichi,%20Osaka%20.jpg" width="150" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yuien's Gravestone</td></tr></tbody></table><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt;">The main hall of Ryukoji Temple was clean
and tidy, which gave me the impression that it is a flourishing Shinshu temple.
Yuien’s gravestone is on the hillside behind the temple. The inscription on it
says, “The grave of the Reverend Yuien, founder of the temple.” The gravestone
was re-erected during the Edo period. We paid homage to Yuien. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

year 2023 is very much in full swing now—in Ukraine even.</span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 22pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt;">Recently
I see strange phantoms at night. I wake up past midnight and look around. Then I
see shadowy figures of men (usually men, not women) or of fierce looking
beasts, some of which are like skeletons. The men may be quietly standing or
walking toward me. Some of the beasts try to attack me. Sometimes my wife wakes
me up when I yell at them or try to protect myself from the charging beasts.
Then I turn on my flashlight and recognize them as pieces of objects on the
floor or clothes hanging in the open wardrobe. A weird thing is that sometimes
I see both real figures and phantoms together. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 22pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt;">I was
thinking of these incidents. I even thought these were signs of my imminent death.
However, I decided that these came from my confused mind, maybe from my
unfulfilled wishes. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="left" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 22pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">Then I thought

demon attacking the Śākyamuni before his enlightenment by means of beautiful

that they were only projections of his deeply hidden desires and that they had

<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; mso-char-indent-count: 1.0; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-indent: 13.0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">話は変わりますが、今年は11月11月17日から12月20日まで、息子がアメリカのアトランタから帰国して我が家にも2週間ほど滞在し、<span lang="EN-US">12</span>月<span lang="EN-US">27</span>日から今日(<span lang="EN-US">30</span>日)まで、東京にいる娘が<span lang="EN-US">3</span>歳の孫娘を連れて来て我が家に泊まっていました。 <span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
</span> </p>Toshikazu Arai 新井俊一http://www.blogger.com/profile/12149415505385472223noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4675714227304853080.post-3497798821589529562022-12-12T10:31:00.001+09:002022-12-12T10:31:11.708+09:00Renewal of the Blog<p><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 28.3pt;"><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span>Sorry about the long silence. Now, my son
who lives in Atlanta, Georgia, is visiting us at home and a half hour ago, he
reminded me that I had not renewed my blog for a long time. He says he
sometimes tries to read it, in vain. So I made a big resolve: I will write for
this blog at least twice a month, or once a week if possible. I will just write
whatever comes to my mind at that time.</span></p>

year. Come to think of it, Śākyamuni Buddha died at age 80. I have outlived
him. Since he likened his physical condition to an old cart being pulled with the
help of leather straps, I seem to be physically in a better condition than he
was. However, there is a Chinese expression “Doing nothing meaningful while
eating a lot.” Alas, what have I done in my life?!<o:p></o:p></span></p>

an easy introductory book to Buddhism and Shin Buddhism in English and
Japanese. That takes time, so this might end up as a big talk. If possible, I
want to give that book to my close relatives, friends, and other people with
some connections before I die.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; mso-char-indent-count: 1.0; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; text-indent: 13.0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 游明朝; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">そう言えば、あのお釈迦様は<span lang="EN-US">80</span>歳まで生きられました。 <span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>Toshikazu Arai </span></p>
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

仏法を聞くとは、帰するところは、この私が<span lang="EN-US"><ruby style="ruby-align: distribute-space;"><span lang="EN-US"><span lang="EN-US">虚妄不実</span></span><rp>(</rp><rt style="font-size: 6.0pt; layout-grid-mode: line;">おおそらごと</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby></span><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">の人生を生きていて、一刻一刻と地獄に墜ちてゆく道を歩んでいること、そしてまた、そういう愚かな私のために、声をかぎりに<span lang="EN-US"><ruby style="ruby-align: distribute-space;"><span lang="EN-US"><span lang="EN-US">喚</span></span><rp>(</rp><rt style="font-size: 6.0pt; layout-grid-mode: line;">よ</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby></span><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">びたもうている、如来の大悲の心をこそ聞くことであります。 この私がまちがいなく地獄に墜ちてゆく、そしてその故にこそ、如来が片時も休むことなく、この私を<span lang="EN-US"><ruby style="ruby-align: distribute-space;"><span lang="EN-US"><span lang="EN-US">喚</span></span><rp>(</rp><rt style="font-size: 6.0pt; layout-grid-mode: line;">よ</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby></span><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">びつづけていてくださるという、そのことが、私の心の底にあつくあつく焼きついて忘れられなくなることこそ、まさしく聞いたということでありましょう。
