Pure Land and Hell 浄土と地獄

Someone asked me if the Pure Land and Hell really exist. The answer is No, if he is talking about their physical existence. The answer is Yes, if he is concerned about their meanings.

Some people believe that the Pure Land actually exists somewhere in this universe. If so, they will have to answer the following questions. Why is it that astronomers have not discovered it with their telescopes? The most advanced telescope can see a galaxy about 13 billion light years away from the earth. If the Pure Land existed farther than that distance, we would never be able to reach there because nothing can travel faster than light. Even to go to the nearest star with a vehicle that can travel at the speed of light, it takes four years. Yet, Shinran says that a person who entrusts himself to Amida can be born in the Pure Land immediately upon saying the nembutsu.

The nembutsu is an extension of the Pure Land. With the nembutsu we experience the working of compassion, peace and tranquility. We don't have to look for the Pure Land so many billion light years away. The Pure Land is with us while we say the nembutsu. And when this life comes to an end, we are released from the yoke of blind passions and the working of karmic forces, and we can be born in the Pure Land immediately.

Contrarily, if we do not encounter the Dharma in this life and die with the ordinary mind immersed in love and hate, likes and dislikes, gain and loss, we will continue to live an ego-centered and disoriented life in the six realms of transmigration. We are living in hell when we do not know where we are heading. We are creating the cause of falling into hell in this life if we keep our eyes closed to the teaching of the Buddha.

On the other hand, if we realize the true nature of the unguided life, we will be released from the world of birth-and-death and be born in the realm of Buddhas, which is the Pure Land.

最近ある人から、浄土とか地獄とかは本当にあるんですか、と聞かれました。もしその人が浄土や地獄の物理的存在を問題にしているのなら答えはNoですが、もしその人が浄土や地獄の意味を問題にしているのなら、答えはYesです。

浄土がこの宇宙のどこかに実際に存在するのだ、と思っている人がいます。もしそんなことがあれば、その人は次に質問に答えなければならないでしょう。天文学者はどうして望遠鏡でそれを見つけられないのでしょうか。今では最も進歩した望遠鏡を使うと、130億光年のかなたの銀河まで見ることができるようになりました。もし浄土がそれ以遠にあるのなら、私たちは決して浄土に生まれることができないでしょう。光より速い物はないからです。最も近い恒星まででも、光の速さの乗り物で4年かかります。それにもかかわらず親鸞聖人は、私たちが阿弥陀仏を信じて念仏を称えた時に直ちに浄土に往生する、とおっしゃっています。

念仏は浄土の延長上にあります。念仏を称える時、私たちは慈悲、平和と寂静を体験します。浄土を見出すのに、何十憶光年のかなたを探す必要はありません。浄土は私たちが念仏を称える時、そこにあるのです。そしてこの世の命が終わった時、私たちは煩悩の絆と業の働きから解放されて、仏の国・浄土に生まれることができるのです。

逆に、もしこの世で仏法に出遇わないで、愛憎・好き嫌い・損得に浸された普通の心で死んだ場合、私たちはいつまでも六道の世界を迷い続けなければなりません。この種の無方向の迷いの世界を地獄というのです。もし仏の教えに目をつぶり続けると、地獄に落ちる原因を作っていることになります。

反対に仏の教えに導かれて、迷いの生の現実に目覚めた時、私たちはこの生死の世界から自由になり、仏の国・浄土に生まれることができるのです。
