December! 師走

It is December again! In Japan, the traditional name for December is "Shiwasu," or "Teachers running around." That is because, the end of the year was considered as something like the end of the world. You had to finish whatever you have left unfinished in the year, so that you could meet the new year without any blemish on your conscience. That is why persons who had lent money ran around to collect their money back and those who had a debt ran around to somehow raise that much money to clear themselves of the debt. The end of the year was compared to the narrow and shallow passage in the river that you had to manage to cross "I cannot cross the passage to the next year!" was the lament of a person who could not settle their debt before the end of the year."

December is called "Shiwasu" because, perhaps, even teachers, who were supposed to look always dignified and calm, ran around to finish all the work that they have left unfinished. As for myself, I am a retired person, so I don't run around giving exams and reading students' papers, calculating their points and determining their grades, attending faculty meetings and bruising each other's feelings, but I must begin to tidy up my residence and study room so that I can cross over the passage to the next year. At least I don't want to carry over the mess to the next year, in order to meet the new year without much blemish on my conscience.

また12月になりました。日本では伝統的に十二月を「師走」と呼んでいます。先生たちが走り回る、という意味です。というのは年の暮れというのは、何か世界の終わりにも似た感覚で捉えられていたからです。それまでにその年でやりっぱなしにしていたものをやってしまって、良心の呵責を持たないことが大切だと考えられました。だから金を貸した人は、その金を回収するために走り回り、金を借りた人は何とか返済しようと金繰りのために走り回りました。年の暮れは、川の狭い浅瀬のように、向こう岸に行くには必ず渡らなければならない所と考えられました。「年の瀬を越せない」は年末までに借金を払えなかった人の嘆きの言葉でした。

十二月が師走と呼ばれるのは、おそらく、いつも威厳を保って静かにしているべき教師が、年の暮れだけはそれまでにやりっ放しにしていた仕事を終えるために走り回るからでしょう。私自身について言えば、私はもう退職していますから、試験をしたり学生のレポートを読んだり、それまでの学生の点数を数えて成績を決めたり、教授会に出席して互いの感情を傷つけあったりしなくてもいいですが、年の瀬を越すために、そろそろ私の住まいと書斎の整理を始めなければなりません。少なくとも、良心の呵責を少なくするためにも、今年の乱雑さを来年に持ち越したくありません。
